Control PS4 File Size Revealed Ahead of Launch

The install size for the PlayStation 4 version of Control was revealed as 24.49 GB. This figure appeared on the game’s product page on the PlayStation Store just days before its scheduled release on August 27, 2019. The game was also slated for launch on PC and Xbox One.

Developed by Remedy Entertainment, Control arrived as a highly anticipated title from the studio behind games like Alan Wake and Quantum Break. The storage requirement provided a key piece of practical information for players planning to purchase the game digitally.

A Moderate File Size

For a major third-person action game in 2019, the 24.49 GB file size was relatively modest. It stood in contrast to many other significant PS4 releases of the period, which often required much more hard drive space. For comparison, titles like God of War (2018) and Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) both occupied around 45 GB at launch, while massive open-world games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 demanded over 100 GB. For PlayStation 4 owners managing the console’s standard internal storage, Control’s smaller footprint was a welcome detail, making it easier to install without deleting multiple other games.

Inside the Oldest House

Control is set within a sprawling, brutalist-inspired New York skyscraper called The Oldest House, which serves as the headquarters for the clandestine Federal Bureau of Control. The game’s official descriptions noted that players would explore diverse environments and shifting architecture in a deep, unpredictable world. This setting is corrupted by an otherworldly force known as the Hiss, which has twisted reality within the building’s walls.

Players assume the role of Jesse Faden, who unexpectedly becomes the Bureau’s new Director and must fight back against the Hiss invasion. The gameplay promised a combination of supernatural abilities, customizable weapon loadouts, and a reactive environment.

Supernatural Combat and Destruction

Gameplay in Control blended traditional third-person shooting with a host of psychic powers. Players could define their combat style by integrating abilities like telekinesis and levitation with upgrades for the Service Weapon, a single firearm that could be modified into various forms. A key feature highlighted before release was the game’s use of dynamic environmental destruction. This system allowed for exciting combat possibilities where nearly every object in a room could be weaponized or destroyed, creating chaotic and visually impressive firefights. The game also involved mastering complex rituals to alter the surroundings, which was necessary for both combat and puzzle-solving.

Control was available in both physical and digital editions at launch. While the physical disc contained most of the data, the full 24.49 GB installation to the console’s hard drive was still required to play.
