What the planner counts
The planner uses the same figures as the file-size database: the install size shown on the platform's store, dated. It picks the size for the platform of the drive you chose, so switching from a PS5 drive to an Xbox drive changes the totals to the Xbox versions. Games with no size on file for that platform stay in the list but do not count, and the row says so.
Usable capacity is the number the console reports, not the number on the box. A launch PS5 with an 825 GB drive gives 667 GB; a Series S with 512 GB gives 364 GB; a Switch 2 with 256 GB gives 221 GB. M.2 expansion drives on PS5 keep almost their full formatted capacity because the console reserves nothing on them. Patches released after a game's last check add to the total, so a margin of a tenth is sensible before buying.

How does the storage planner calculate free space?
It subtracts the install size of each selected game from the usable capacity of the chosen drive. Usable capacity is what the console reports after its system reserve: 667 GB on the launch PS5, 848 GB on the 1 TB Slim, 802 GB on Series X, 364 GB on the 512 GB Series S, 221 GB on Switch 2.
Which size does the planner use for a game?
The size for the platform of the chosen drive. Selecting a PS5 drive uses PS5 sizes; an Xbox drive uses Xbox Series X|S sizes; Switch 2 uses the Switch 2 figure or, if none is listed, the Switch figure. Games without a size for that platform are shown but not counted.
Why is usable space less than the drive size?
Each console reserves part of the drive for the system software, caches and captures, and drives report capacity in decimal gigabytes while the console counts in binary. Both effects reduce what is available for games.
Can I plan for an M.2 expansion drive?
Yes. Choose the 1 TB or 2 TB expansion option; the PS5 uses the full drive for games with no system reserve, so only the decimal-to-binary difference applies.
Does the planner include patches?
It uses the store install size as of the date each game was last checked, which includes patches folded into the package at that time. Later updates add to the total, so leave a margin of 10 to 15 percent.
