How game file sizes are measured on this page
A game file size is the space the installed package occupies on the console's drive, and it is the only number that decides whether the next download fits. Stores show it before you buy; consoles show it in storage settings after you install; the two rarely agree to the gigabyte. This database records the store figure, because it is the one available before the download starts, and stamps every entry with the date it was read. Xbox Series X and PC sizes come from the Microsoft Store catalogue and Steam. PlayStation sizes come from PlayStation Store data. When a figure cannot be confirmed from one of those sources the cell stays empty rather than guessing.
Three things make the numbers move. Patches fold into the base package and grow it a few gigabytes at a time. Language packs and high-resolution texture packs are sometimes optional and sometimes not, which is why the same game can be listed at 60 GB on one store and 90 GB on another. And publishers occasionally re-master the package: Call of Duty titles have shrunk and grown by tens of gigabytes between seasons as assets were split into separately downloadable modules.
PS5 game file sizes: why Sony's consoles install smaller
PS5 game file sizes run smaller than their Xbox and PC counterparts, and the biggest PS5 games still clear 100 GB. The PS5 ships with a hardware Kraken decompressor that unpacks assets on the fly, which lets developers keep more of the package compressed on disk. The practical effect is visible across the table above: for most multiplatform releases the PS5 build is the smallest of the current-generation versions, often by 10 to 25 percent. A second factor is Sony's approach to optional content. PS5 titles more often let you skip single-player or multiplayer modules, and the store figure reflects the default selection.
The launch PS5 has an 825 GB drive with about 667 GB usable after the system reserve; the Slim and Pro models ship with 1 TB and about 848 GB usable. The stacked meter above shows what installs of that class do to a drive in practice. Five of the biggest games fill the launch console, and that is before a single patch. An M.2 expansion drive is the standard answer, and the PS5 SSD checker lists which drives meet Sony's speed and height requirements.
Xbox game file sizes: Series X, Series S and Smart Delivery
Xbox game file sizes tend to be the largest of the three console platforms. Part of that is packaging: many Series X|S downloads carry both the Series X and Series S asset sets, and the console keeps what it needs. Part of it is compression, which is applied per-package by the developer rather than across the board by the hardware. The upside is that Xbox is the most transparent platform about size: the Microsoft Store catalogue exposes the exact package size in bytes, which is where the figures in the table come from, and Smart Delivery keeps a single listing for Xbox One and Series versions.
The Series S is the platform where size hurts most. Its 512 GB drive leaves about 364 GB usable, so three or four of the biggest games fill it. The Series S build of a game is typically 20 to 40 percent smaller than the Series X build because it ships lower-resolution textures, and the table lists the Series X|S package as the store reports it.
Switch, Switch 2 and PC
Switch game file sizes are small because the assets are: a game that needs 80 GB on PS5 can fit in 15 GB on Switch with lower-resolution textures and compressed audio. Switch 2 changes that. Native Switch 2 games and Switch 2 Editions ship larger assets, and the console's 256 GB of storage (about 221 GB usable) fills quickly; game-key cards, which download the full game rather than storing it on the card, make the microSD Express slot a near-necessity for physical buyers.
PC game file sizes are the least predictable because the platform allows the most choice. Steam lists a required space that reflects the default install; 4K texture packs, uncompressed audio options and language packs can push the real figure far beyond it. The PC column uses Steam's listed requirement and notes on the game pages where an optional pack changes the total.
Why game file sizes are so big now, and where the trend goes
The biggest Xbox games in the database are open-world and live-service titles, and the direction is one way: the average install size of a new AAA release has roughly doubled since 2019. The largest entries now sit well above 150 GB, and the first titles to announce sizes above 200 GB for their full content have already arrived. At the other end, remasters of PS3-era games and most indie releases still fit in single digits.
Two developments push back against the growth. Compression improvements on PS5 and the Series consoles have kept some sequels flat despite larger worlds, and modular downloads let players skip the campaign or the multiplayer mode they do not use. Neither reverses the trend, but they make the storage planner worth using before a purchase rather than after the "not enough free space" message.
How to check game file sizes on each platform
Every store shows the install size before purchase, but each hides it in a different place. On PS5 and PS4, open the game's store page and look under the platform badge for "File size"; on the console itself, Settings > Storage lists every installed title with its current footprint. On Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, the store page lists "Approximate size", and Settings > System > Storage shows the installed figure per game. On Switch and Switch 2, the eShop page states "Required space" for both the download and the physical version's mandatory download. On PC, the Steam store page lists storage under system requirements, and the Steam library's Properties dialog shows the real installed size after download; Windows 10 and 11 also list it under Apps > Installed apps. The database here collects those figures so you do not have to open four stores to compare one game.
Using the database
Each game has its own page with every platform's size side by side, a fit check against the common drive capacities, and links to the coverage of that game elsewhere on the site. The storage planner takes any selection of games and a drive and reports used and free space using the real usable capacity. Platform hubs for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and PC list the sizes relevant to each console alongside the news and guides for it.
Corrections and requests go through the contact page. A game with an official store listing is usually added within days.

Game file sizes: frequently asked questions
Where are the PS5 game file sizes?
PS5 figures are listed as their store listings publish confirmable numbers; each game page shows every platform with a confirmed size and the date it was checked. The Xbox Series X figures above are the closest guide in the meantime, since the two consoles usually land within a few gigabytes of each other.
Are Xbox Series X game file sizes larger than PS5?
Usually, yes. The Xbox download frequently bundles Series S assets in the same package and uses a different compression scheme; the PS5's Kraken decompressor lets developers ship smaller installs.
How much usable space does a PS5 actually have?
The launch PS5 with its 825 GB SSD offers about 667 GB after the system reserve. The PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro with 1 TB drives offer about 848 GB. Sony reports these figures in the console's storage settings; the planner on this site uses them rather than the marketing capacity.
Do game file sizes include patches and updates?
The listed figure is the store's install size at the time it was checked, which already includes patches folded into the current package. Updates released after that date add to it, which is why every row carries a date.
Why is the download smaller than the file size shown?
Packages are compressed for transfer and expanded on the console. A 90 GB install can arrive as a 60–70 GB download. The number that matters for free space is the installed size, so that is the one the database lists.
How many games fit on a 1 TB PS5?
With about 848 GB usable, a 1 TB PS5 holds roughly eight to nine games of the current average size, or five to six of the largest open-world releases. The exact answer depends on the mix; the storage planner works it out from the real sizes.
Do Switch 2 game file sizes differ from Switch?
Yes. Switch 2 editions and native Switch 2 games are larger because they ship higher-resolution assets; several ports that fit in 10–15 GB on Switch take 30 GB or more on Switch 2. Game-key cards also require the full download to the console or a microSD Express card.
Why do PC game file sizes vary between stores?
Steam lists the space required at install; other launchers sometimes list the download. High-resolution texture packs and language packs are optional on PC, so the minimum figure on the store page can be well below the full install.
Can I install PS5 games on an external USB drive?
PS5 games can be stored on an external USB drive but must be moved to the internal SSD or an M.2 expansion drive to be played. PS4 games run directly from a USB drive. The SSD checker lists M.2 drives that meet Sony's requirements.
How often are the file sizes updated?
Xbox and PC sizes are re-read from the store catalogues on a rolling schedule; figures for further platforms are added as their store listings publish confirmable numbers. The most recent check on this page is Aug 28, 2026. Each game page shows its own date.
Which platform has the smallest version of a game?
For multiplatform releases it is most often the PS5, followed by PS4, with Xbox Series X and PC largest. Switch versions are smaller still because they use lower-resolution assets, not because they are compressed better.
Does deleting a game also remove its saves?
No. Saves live separately from the game data on PS5, Xbox and Switch. Deleting the game frees its install size and leaves saves in place; reinstalling later picks them up again.
Why does the store show a different size than my console after installing?
The console reports the size including patches installed after the base package, plus any add-ons and language packs you chose. The store figure is the base package as offered at the time of listing.
Is the 100 GB figure for a game the same in every region?
Mostly. Regional builds differ only by language packs and, occasionally, censorship edits that change assets. The database uses US store listings; differences of more than a few gigabytes between regions are rare.
What is the smallest game in the database?
20 Minutes Till Dawn at 0.1 GB. Small indie releases and remasters of last-generation games sit at the bottom of the list; the largest and smallest entries differ by two orders of magnitude.
Why are game file sizes so big now?
Textures are the main reason. A 4K texture set is four times the size of a 1080p set, and games ship several quality levels of each texture plus uncompressed audio in multiple languages so nothing has to be unpacked at load time. Open worlds multiply that by the size of the map. Average AAA install size has roughly doubled since 2019 for those reasons.
Will game file sizes get smaller?
Not overall. Better compression on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and optional modules that let players skip a campaign or a multiplayer mode keep some titles flat, but each new generation of textures grows faster than compression improves. Expect the biggest releases to keep climbing and mid-size titles to stay where they are.
Why are Steam game file sizes not the same as the download size?
Steam lists the space required on disk after installation. The download is compressed in transit and usually 20 to 40 percent smaller than the installed size. Steam also downloads only the parts that changed when a game updates, so update downloads can be much smaller than the patch notes suggest.
How do I see Xbox One X or Series X game file sizes?
On the console go to Settings > System > Storage and select the drive; each installed game shows its size. Before you buy, the Microsoft Store page lists an approximate size, and this database records the exact package size the store catalogue reports for the Series X|S and Xbox One builds.
Where can I check Switch game file sizes online?
The Nintendo eShop page for each game states the required space under the price. For physical releases the same page shows how much must be downloaded. The database here lists Switch and Switch 2 figures where a listing exists; Nintendo publishes no API, so those entries are maintained by hand.
Why were N64 and other cartridge game file sizes so small?
Cartridges held 4 to 64 MB and every asset had to fit, so developers used low-resolution textures, tiny audio samples and compressed geometry. Optical discs and hard drives removed the ceiling, and assets grew to fill the space; today's 100 GB installs are the same games with orders of magnitude more texture and audio data.
Can the storage planner check several games at once?
Yes. Pick any games from the database, choose a drive (825 GB PS5, 1 TB, 2 TB, Series S, Switch 2) and the planner shows the used and free space using the usable capacity after the system reserve.
