First Volume of the Danganronpa Manga Released in English

The first volume of the manga adaptation for Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc received an English-language release from publisher Dark Horse. The book translates the tense story of the original PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita visual novel into a new medium, making the narrative accessible to both longtime fans and readers new to the series. Hope’s Peak Academy’s Deadly Secret

The manga’s plot mirrors that of the video game it is based on. The story follows Makoto Naegi, an ordinary high school student who wins a lottery to enroll in the elite Hope’s Peak Academy. This government-sponsored school is reserved for Japan’s best and brightest, with each student possessing an “Ultimate” talent, such as the Ultimate Pop Sensation or the Ultimate Baseball Star. Makoto is the exception, holding the title of Ultimate Lucky Student.

Shortly after the entrance ceremony, Makoto and his fourteen new classmates lose consciousness and awaken to find the school sealed off from the outside world. They are introduced to their new headmaster: a sadistic, black-and-white robotic bear named Monokuma. He informs the students that they are part of a “killing game.” To escape and graduate, a student must murder one of their peers and get away with it.

The Class Trial System

Following a murder, a brief investigation period allows the remaining students to gather clues. Afterward, they must participate in a class trial to debate the evidence and determine the identity of the culprit, known as the “blackened.” If the students correctly identify the murderer, Monokuma executes the guilty party in a uniquely tailored and gruesome fashion, and the game continues. However, if they vote for the wrong person, the true killer is allowed to graduate and escape, while all the innocent students are executed. This high-stakes system creates an atmosphere of paranoia and distrust, as any one of the students could be a potential victim or killer. Franchise Expansion

The manga’s release coincided with a period of significant growth for the Danganronpa franchise in the West. NIS America had recently published the PlayStation Vita exclusive Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls in North America. This title was a departure from the main series, shifting from a visual novel format to a third-person action-adventure game.

At the 2015 Tokyo Game Show, developer Spike Chunsoft announced the next mainline entry, New Danganronpa V3: Minna no Koroshiai Shingakki. The game was revealed for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, marking the series’ debut on a home console.
