Batmobile Combat and Traversal

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Rocksteady Studios released a new collection of screenshots for Batman: Arkham Knight during Gamescom 2014. The images provided a detailed look at the game’s mechanics, with a significant focus on the newly drivable Batmobile. Several shots showcased the vehicle’s two distinct modes: Pursuit and Battle.

In Pursuit Mode, the Batmobile is depicted as a high-speed vehicle built for navigating the streets of Gotham and chasing down enemy vehicles. One image showed it boosting through a barricade, debris flying as it tears through the city. Other screenshots focused on Battle Mode, a tank-like configuration where the Batmobile gains 360-degree movement and deploys a range of heavy weaponry. The vehicle’s 60mm cannon, vulcan gun, and riot suppressor were all visible, highlighting its role in the game’s combat against the Arkham Knight’s drone army. The detailed textures and particle effects on display underscored the game’s development for a new generation of hardware.

Gotham’s Protector and His City

The screenshots also offered fresh perspectives on Batman himself and the sprawling urban environment. The updated Batsuit, designated v8.03, was shown in high detail, revealing intricate armor plating and technological components. Images captured Batman in the midst of Freeflow Combat, engaging multiple thugs at once and using environmental objects for takedowns. These combat sequences demonstrated the fluidity and brutality of the refined fighting system.

Other images focused on traversal, with Batman seen gliding high above the Gotham cityscape. The neon-lit streets, rain-slicked rooftops, and towering skyscrapers emphasized the scale of the open world, which was said to be significantly larger than that of Arkham City. The dark, gothic atmosphere, a signature of the series, was prominent in every frame, from the steam rising from vents to the distant glow of the Bat-Signal against a stormy sky.

Familiar Faces in a City Under Siege

Beyond the action, the Gamescom screenshots provided glimpses of key supporting characters central to the narrative. One notable image featured Barbara Gordon in her role as Oracle, situated within her command center in the Gotham Clock Tower. Surrounded by computer monitors, she appeared to be providing tactical support to Batman. This was a significant look at her character model in-game.

Another screenshot showed Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon standing on a rooftop, his expression conveying the gravity of the city’s situation. With Scarecrow having forced a city-wide evacuation, the remaining characters are isolated in a warzone. These character-focused images helped to ground the high-octane action of the Batmobile and Batman’s combat, hinting at the personal stakes involved in the final chapter of Rocksteady’s trilogy. Batman: Arkham Knight was scheduled for a 2015 release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
