A Look at the Final Fantasy XV '16-Bit Buddies' Regalia Recolor and Angler Set

Listings on the Xbox Store revealed two downloadable content packs for Final Fantasy XV: the “Recolor: 16-Bit Buddies” car skin and the “Item: Angler Set.” These items were part of a suite of pre-order incentives for the digital version of the game on Xbox One. The bonuses were also available for digital pre-orders on the PlayStation 4.

The DLC provided players with cosmetic and practical advantages. The reveal offered a glimpse into how Square Enix planned to support the game with smaller content drops and reward early adopters ahead of its release.

The ‘16-Bit Buddies’ Regalia Skin

The most visually distinct of the two items was the “Recolor: 16-Bit Buddies.” This DLC provided an exclusive decal for the Regalia, the convertible car that Noctis and his companions use to traverse the world of Eos. Instead of a simple color swap, this skin decorated the vehicle with pixel art renditions of the four main characters: Noctis, Gladiolus, Ignis, and Prompto. The art style deliberately evoked the 16-bit era of gaming, a nod to the Final Fantasy series’ roots on the Super Nintendo.

The decal featured the characters in a classic side-scrolling pose, adding a retro flair to the otherwise sleek and modern design of the Regalia. For players, this was a way to customize their primary mode of transportation with a unique, nostalgic aesthetic. The description on the Xbox Store encouraged players to “Ride in retro style by tricking out the Regalia.” Vehicle customization was a known feature of the game, and this pre-order bonus was one of the first cosmetic options shown outside of standard paint jobs.

Angler Set and Other Pre-Order Bonuses

The second item was the “Item: Angler Set.” This tackle box was designed to give players a head start in the fishing mini-game. Fishing in Final Fantasy XV was presented as a significant side activity, allowing players to catch various fish that could be used for cooking meals at camp, which in turn provided statistical boosts to the party. The Angler Set was described as a “handy tackle box” to help players “snag a whopper” and become an “Ace Angler.”

These two items were not the only incentives for pre-ordering the game digitally. Both the Xbox Store and PlayStation Store digital versions also included the Masamune, a legendary sword from the Final Fantasy series. This powerful weapon was a significant bonus, giving players a strong piece of equipment from the start of their adventure. The Masamune was not exclusive to digital pre-orders; it was also included in the physical Day One Edition and the more expensive Deluxe Edition of the game.

This collection of pre-order bonuses highlighted the different offerings for digital and physical purchasers. While the core Masamune weapon was available across multiple versions, unique items like the 16-Bit Buddies skin and the Angler Set were positioned as specific rewards for committing to a digital purchase on consoles ahead of the game’s launch.
