Discounts Were Offered on Red Dead Revolver, GTA and Other Rockstar PS2-on-PS4 Games

In September 2017, a promotion on the PlayStation Store via Amazon offered digital codes for several of Rockstar Games’ classic PlayStation 2 titles, which had been ported to the PlayStation 4. The sale featured discounts of up to 40% on iconic games, including entries from the Grand Theft Auto series, Bully, and the original Red Dead game, Red Dead Revolver.

These PS2-on-PS4 titles were not remasters but emulated versions of the originals. The ports featured 1080p up-rendering, trophy support, and modern PlayStation Network features like Share Play and Remote Play.

Grand Theft Auto Discounts

The sale included multiple options for fans of the 3D-era Grand Theft Auto games. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy, a bundle containing Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, was listed with the steepest discount at 40% off. This collection offered three distinct open-world experiences, from the silent protagonist of Liberty City to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and the sprawling, gang-controlled state of San Andreas.

For players who preferred to purchase the games individually, Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas were each available with a 30% discount. Each game was a landmark title for the PS2, defining the open-world genre for a generation.

A separate bundle was also part of the promotion, packaging the PS4 version of Grand Theft Auto V with the PS2 classic Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. This combined offering was available at 40% off, giving players both Rockstar’s then-latest open-world title and one of its most celebrated predecessors.

Other Rockstar Classics on Offer

Beyond the Grand Theft Auto series, the sale extended to several other notable Rockstar titles from the same era, each discounted by 30%.

• Bully: Originally released as Canis Canem Edit in some regions, this game puts players in the shoes of Jimmy Hopkins, a troubled teen navigating the social hierarchy of Bullworth Academy. Instead of a sprawling city, the game offered a detailed school campus and surrounding town, with missions revolving around classes, cliques, and pranks.

• Manhunt: One of Rockstar’s most controversial titles, Manhunt is a stealth-based survival horror game. Players control James Earl Cash, a death row inmate forced to participate in a series of snuff films. The game was known for its dark tone and visceral, stealth-focused gameplay.

• Red Dead Revolver: The first game in the Red Dead series, Revolver is an arcade-style third-person shooter. It tells the story of bounty hunter Red Harlow on a quest for revenge in the Old West. While tonally different from its open-world successors, it established the western setting and gunslinging mechanics the series would become famous for.

• The Warriors: Based on the 1979 cult classic film of the same name, this game is a beat ‘em up that expands on the movie’s plot. Players control members of the titular street gang as they fight their way back to their home turf of Coney Island through a hostile, stylized version of New York City.
