Collective Minds released a multi-function media hub for the Xbox One designed to solve two common issues with the original console: limited storage capacity and inconvenient port access. The accessory combines a 2.5-inch hard drive enclosure with a three-port USB 3.0 hub, all housed in a unit that attaches directly to the side of the console. This offered a more integrated solution than using a separate, cabled external drive.

Addressing Xbox One Storage Limitations

The original Xbox One model launched with a 500 GB internal hard drive. While this seemed substantial initially, the increasing size of game installations quickly made it a limiting factor for players with large digital libraries. A single major title could consume over 50 GB, meaning the internal drive could fill up after installing fewer than ten games.

Microsoft’s design for the Xbox One did not allow for users to easily swap out the internal hard drive. The official solution was to enable support for external hard drives via the console’s USB 3.0 ports. Any standard external HDD with a capacity of 256 GB or more would work, but this often meant having another device and its cables sitting next to the console.

How the Collective Minds Enclosure Works

The Collective Minds Media Hub provided an alternative. Instead of requiring a pre-built external drive, it allowed users to purchase and install any standard 2.5-inch internal SATA hard drive. This gave users more flexibility in choosing the specific drive model and capacity they wanted. The enclosure specified compatibility with drives that were 12mm or less in height, a standard that covered most laptop-sized hard drives available at the time.

The minimum capacity requirement of 256 GB matched Microsoft’s own specifications for external storage. Once a drive was installed inside the hub and connected to the console, the Xbox One operating system would detect it and prompt the user to format it for use with games and applications.

Added Convenience with a 3-Port USB Hub

A significant secondary feature of the device was its integrated USB hub. The original Xbox One console had three USB 3.0 ports: one on the left side and two on the rear. The rear ports were often difficult to reach, and the single side port could be easily occupied. The Collective Minds hub connected to this side port, but in its place, it offered three front-facing USB 3.0 ports.

This represented a net gain of two ports and a major ergonomic improvement. Players could easily connect wired controllers, charge multiple wireless controllers simultaneously, or plug in other peripherals without having to access the back of the console. This front-facing access was a practical benefit for everyday use.

Aesthetic and Physical Integration

Beyond its technical functionality, a key selling point of the Media Hub was its physical design. Collective Minds engineered the enclosure to look like a natural extension of the Xbox One. It attached securely to the left side of the console, aligning with its vents and contours. The plastic was colored and textured to match the original black Xbox One’s finish, creating a cohesive and streamlined appearance. For users who valued a tidy entertainment setup, this was a much cleaner look than a separate external hard drive connected by a visible USB cable.
