New Screenshots for Mewtwo and Mii Fighter DLC in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U & 3DS

Nintendo released a batch of screenshots for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, providing a first look at the upcoming paid downloadable content. The images highlighted the returning fighter Mewtwo and a collection of new Mii Fighter costumes, all scheduled for an April 2015 release. This first wave of paid DLC established a new model of post-launch support for the fighting game. The screenshots also showcased the visual differences between the two platforms, with the Wii U’s HD graphics contrasting with the 3DS’s portable, cel-shaded presentation.

Mii Fighter Costume Collection

The first DLC to arrive was a set of Mii Fighter costumes, released on April 15. This bundle offered players new ways to customize their Mii Brawlers, Swordfighters, and Gunners. The costumes were themed around several iconic Nintendo and Capcom franchises, along with some original designs.

The full set, named the Mii Fighter Costume Bundle #1, included the following items:

• The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Cap, Link’s Outfit, and Majora’s Mask.
• Mega Man: Two sets of armor based on Capcom characters—Proto Man’s Helmet and Armor, and X’s Helmet and Armor.
• Xenoblade Chronicles: A wig and outfit to resemble the character Dunban.
• Originals: A Cat Suit with matching hat, a Monkey Suit with a hat, and a Super Smash Bros. logo T-shirt.

Nintendo provided two ways to purchase these items. Players could buy individual costumes for $0.75 on a single platform (Wii U or 3DS). For $1.15, a player could unlock a single costume on both systems. This à la carte pricing allowed fans to pick only their favorite items. Alternatively, the complete Mii Fighter Costume Bundle #1 was available for $6.00 on one system, or $9.20 for cross-buy access on both Wii U and 3DS.

The Return of Mewtwo

Following the costumes, the first DLC fighter, Mewtwo, was released on April 28. A veteran of Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mewtwo’s absence in the subsequent Brawl was a point of discussion among fans, making its return a significant event.

A special promotional offer was made available to early supporters of the game. Players who had purchased and registered both the Wii U and 3DS versions of Super Smash Bros. via Club Nintendo before the program’s March 31, 2015 deadline were eligible to receive Mewtwo for free. These players were sent download codes for both versions of the game.

For all other players, Mewtwo was available as a standard paid download. The character cost $3.99 for a single platform. A cross-buy option was priced at $4.99, which unlocked the Psychic-type Pokémon on both the Wii U and 3DS. The screenshots released by Nintendo showed Mewtwo in combat, using its signature moves like Shadow Ball and Confusion on various stages.

Future DLC: Lucas from Mother 3

Nintendo also used the opportunity to announce the next DLC fighter. Lucas, the main character from the Japan-only RPG Mother 3, was confirmed to be in development. Lucas was also a veteran fighter, having previously appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

His release was slated for June 2015. However, unlike the April content, Nintendo did not provide a price for Lucas at the time of the announcement. This reveal solidified that the game would receive ongoing character support, sparking conversations about other potential returning fighters or newcomers.
