How controller compatibility works across consoles

Every current console authenticates controllers. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo each license a chip that a pad must carry to be recognised, and the licences do not overlap: a controller built for Xbox is refused by a PS5 even though both speak USB and Bluetooth. That is why the same product name appears in two or three editions, why a "PS5" fight stick and an "Xbox" fight stick are different SKUs, and why the matrix has separate columns rather than a single yes.

PlayStation adds a wrinkle. The PS4 licence and the PS5 licence are separate, and many third-party pads carry only the older one. They pair with a PS5 and work in PS4 games, then vanish the moment a PS5 title starts. The "PS4 games only" entries in the PS5 column mark exactly that case; "Yes" means the controller carries the PS5 licence and works everywhere on the console.

Adapters

Protocol adapters such as the Brook Wingman family sit between a controller and a console and translate one authentication into another. They work, with limits: PS5 games are generally off the table because the PS5 licence is not emulated, features such as adaptive triggers and haptics do not pass through, and a console firmware update can break the adapter until its own firmware catches up. The table lists "With adapter" only where the adapter route is well established.

PC is the exception

Windows accepts nearly everything. Xbox controllers use XInput and work without setup; DualSense, DualShock 4, Switch Pro and most third-party pads work through Steam Input or the game's own support. The PC column distinguishes native XInput support from Steam Input, because a game outside Steam may need a wrapper for a non-Xbox pad.

Fight sticks and wheels

Arcade sticks and racing wheels are where the licensing cost shows most, since a stick can cost more than the console. Manufacturers respond with multi-console editions (a PS5 stick that also works on PC and often PS4) and with swappable boards. Racing wheels follow the same split: Logitech's G29 and G923 come in PlayStation and Xbox versions, Thrustmaster's T300 is PlayStation and PC, and Fanatec sells a GT DD Pro for PlayStation alongside an Xbox-licensed CSL DD.

The matrix is built from the manufacturers' compatibility statements and re-checked when a platform update changes support. Missing controllers can be requested through the contact page.

Controller compatibility: frequently asked questions

Does the DualSense work on Xbox?

No. The DualSense pairs with PS5, PC (via USB or Bluetooth), Mac, iOS and Android, but Xbox consoles accept only Microsoft-licensed controllers. Third-party adapters that translate the protocol exist but are unsupported and can be blocked by system updates.

Can I use an Xbox controller on PS5?

Not natively. PS5 games require a controller that speaks Sony's protocol, which means the DualSense, DualSense Edge, the Access controller or a licensed third-party pad. Adapters such as the Brook Wingman line let an Xbox controller act as a DualShock 4, which works in PS4 titles only.

Why do some third-party PS5 controllers only work in PS4 games?

Sony's PS5 authentication is licensed separately from the PS4 one. Many pads carry the PS4 licence and appear as a DualShock 4, which PS5 games refuse. Only controllers with the PS5 licence, such as the Victrix Pro BFG, Nacon Revolution 5 Pro and the Razer Wolverine V3 Pro (PS5 version), work in PS5 titles.

Which fight sticks work on both PS5 and PC?

Sticks sold for PS5 almost always include PC support: the Hori Fighting Stick alpha, Victrix Pro FS, Qanba Obsidian 2 and Mad Catz T.E.3 in their PS5 editions all connect to PC over USB. The Xbox editions of the same sticks work on Xbox and PC but not PS5.

Do Switch controllers work on Switch 2?

Yes. The Switch Pro Controller and original Joy-Con pair with Switch 2 for games that support them; the new Joy-Con 2 and Switch 2 Pro Controller add the C button and mouse mode. Third-party Switch pads generally carry over.

Which racing wheels work on PS5?

Logitech G29 and G923 (PlayStation versions), Thrustmaster T300 RS, T248 and T-GT II, and Fanatec's GT DD Pro are PS5-licensed. The Xbox editions of the same wheels (G920, TMX, CSL DD for Xbox) do not work on PlayStation.

Do the DualSense adaptive triggers work on PC?

In games that support them, yes, over USB and in some titles over Bluetooth. Steam Input exposes the DualSense fully; games without native support treat it as a standard pad with no haptics.

Is there a controller that works on every platform?

The 8BitDo Pro 3 and Ultimate 2 cover Switch, Switch 2, PC and mobile, and the Xbox-licensed Ultimate 2C covers Xbox and PC, but no single controller carries Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo licences at once. Wheels and fight sticks come closest by offering console-specific editions.

What does "licensed" mean in the table?

A licensed controller carries the platform holder's authentication chip and is guaranteed to work on that console, including after system updates. Unlicensed pads rely on protocol compatibility that a firmware update can break, and some consoles block them outright.

Can I use a Switch Pro Controller on PC?

Yes, over Bluetooth or USB. Windows does not recognise it natively, but Steam Input supports it fully, including gyro, and most launchers route through Steam or accept it as a generic pad with remapping.
