2020 Buyer’s Guide: PS4 and Xbox One Fight Pads for SoulCalibur VI

The SoulCalibur franchise is finally coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with its sixth mainline installment. While you can play the 3D fighting game with a DualShock 4 and Xbox One Wireless Controller, there are a few dedicated fight pads worth checking out if you want to play in a more optimal way. Below, you can check out our buyer’s guide for the best PS4 and Xbox One fight pads to check out in 2020 and beyond.

SoulCalibur VI Controls

Before we start, let’s take a look at the control setup for SoulCalibur VI:

PlayStation 4 Version:

  • Circle: Kick or Melee
  • X: Guard
  • Square: Horizontal Attack
  • Triangle: Vertical Attack
  • L1: Break Attack
  • L2: Throw
  • R1: Reversal
  • R2: Critical Edge

Xbox One Version:

  • B: Guard
  • A: Horizontal Attack
  • X: Vertical Attack
  • Y: Vertical Attack
  • LB: Break Attack
  • LT: Throw
  • RB: Reversal
  • RT: Critical Edge

As you can see above, SoulCalibur 6 requires you to use all four shoulder buttons in addition to the four face buttons.

Hori Fighting Commander

If you are looking for the best fight pad for Soul Calibur VI, then you can’t do any better than the Hori Fighting Commander. The dedicated fighting game controller uses a six button layout as the R1 and R2 shoulder buttons for the PlayStation 4 version in addition to the RB and RT shoulder buttons from the Xbox One version have been placed alongside the four regular face buttons. These buttons are also larger than the ones found on the DualShock 4 and Xbox One Wireless Controller.

One great feature for this fighting pad is that you can change the L1 and L2 inputs to the R1 and R2 buttons on the PS4 and LB and LT inputs to the RB and RT buttons on the Xbox One. On the PlayStation 4, this can be done by using the R/L toggle switch. On the Xbox One, you have to use the assign button to do so. By changing the left shoulder buttons input to the right shoulder buttons, you have all eight action buttons on your right hand, which will free up your left hand to focus exclusively on movement and directional inputs.

The PlayStation 4 Fighting Commander, which is officially licensed by Sony, is also compatible with the PlayStation 3 and PC (via X-input). It uses a 10-foot wired cable for connection and has turbo functions. If you are interested, you can purchase the PS4 version of the fight pad with this link on Amazon.

The Xbox One Fighting Commander has been officially licensed by Microsoft. This controller, which is also compatible with the Xbox 360 and PC (via X-input), uses a 10-foot wired cable connection. If you are interested, you can purchase the Xbox version via this page.

Alternate PS4 fight pads

The PlayStation 4 has several alternate fight pads worth checking out along with the aforementioned Hori Fighting Commander, especially if you want the option to use a left analog stick for Soul Calibur 6.

The first is the Mad Catz Street Fighter V FightPad Pro, which has the same six button layout and ability to switch shoulder button inputs as the Fighting Commander. It also features a functional touch pad in addition to the aforementioned left analog. While this controller used to have an issue with the directional pad, it has been fixed with the newer versions.

The  Mad Catz Street Fighter V FightPad Pro, which is also compatible with the PlayStation 3, comes in four different colors. You can check out the available options with the following links: Black, Blue, Red and White.

Another alternative for the PS4 version of SoulCalibur VI is the Dragon Slay FightPad Elite. This controller has a left analog stick, touch pad, six button layout in addition to the ability to swap shoulder button inputs. You can find the Dragon Slay FightPad Elite with this page.

The best SoulCalibur VI fighting pads to check out in 2020 are the Hori Fighting Commanders. With that said, there are two pretty good alternatives on the PS4 side with the Mad Catz Street Fighter V FightPad Pro and Dragon Slay FightPad Elite if you prefer having the option of using a left analog stick along with the directional pad.
