Playstation 4 exclusives at Gamescom: What to (and not to) expect

The Last Guardian

Sony is planning another big showcase at Gamescom this year. So what should gamers expect for the Playstation 4 exclusives at the event? Just how many of these videogames will be revealed (or re-revealed in some cases). Find our predictions below at what games and studios we expect to (and not to) be present at Gamescom.

Guerrilla Games

Guerrilla Games, the developer of Killzone Shadow Fall, has been opened about working on a new I.P. The current rumors say that the new videogame is supposed to be an open world RPG with a robotic dinosaurs and a red-haired female lead. Guerrilla Games admitted that their new I.P. was not ready to be shown for E3 in June, making it somewhat unlikely that it would be ready for show time in just two months.

  • Our Predictions: Somewhat Unlikely

Media Molecule

Media Molecule is also creating a new I.P. for Sony. Last February, the studio showed off a tech demo using the Playstation Move to create models and interact with virtual characters. A small team from within released Teraway last year on the Vita while the studio is also helping out Sumo Digital with LittleBigPlanet 3, which is going to be one of the biggest releases on the next-gen system in 2014. Media Molecule is not a big company to begin with so we may have to wait a little longer to see their new I.P. due to their current workload.

  • Our Predictions: Very Unlikely

Quantic Dream

Quantic Dream released Beyond: Two Souls on the Playstation 3 last year and have already started worked on a Playstation 4 exclusive video game. The studio showed off an impressive tech demo last February and at E3 in 2013. Since the team is using the same engine with upgraded specs, it is possible that we could hear something soon even though there have been no rumors about it being announced for Gamescom.

  • Our Predictions: 50/50

Polyphony Digital

Gran Turismo is most popular in Europe. So could we be hearing something about some sort of Playstation 4 release at Gamescom? Kazunori Yamauchi said in the past that Polyphony Digital is interested in porting Gran Turismo 6 to the next-gen platform. The same person also admitted that work on Gran Turismo 7 has already started. With that said, Sony may want to keep the spotlight on another exclusive game, Drive Club. Thus, a reveal of Gran Turismo for Playstation 4 may be saved for another event.

  • Our Predictions: Unlikely

SCE Japan Studio

With the exception of Bloodborne, the Japanese side of Sony may wait until the Tokyo Game Show to show off more of their upcoming slate of releases. There have been some speculations of Gravity Rush 2 and The Last Guardian being moved to the Playstation 4. Nevertheless, those announcements are likely being saved for Japanese-centric events.

  • Our Predictions: Very Unlikely

Bend Studio

Bend Studio was responsible for Syphon Filter before going on to create Uncharted: Golden Abyss for the Playstation Vita. Their new project is supposedly an open world survival horror videogame. It seems like it is still too early to be shown, however. Not to mention that Sony is already pushing Until Dawn at Gamescom.

  • Our Predictions: Very Unlikely

Naughty Dog

Naughty Dog just finished releasing The Last of Us: Remastered. A teaser for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was also shown at E3 two months ago. So it could be possible that we could see some real gameplay even though there have been no indications from the rumor mills so far. Naughty Dog recently announced that another project has started. Nonetheless, we most likely won’t hear about it for a long time.

  • Our Predictions: 50/50 for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Extremely Unlikely for new Naughty Dog videogame

Everybody’s Gone to Rapture, Rime and Shadow of the Beast

Sony announced Everybody’s Gone to Rapture, Rime and Shadow of the Beast at Gamescom in 2013. Recent indications are that Everybody’s Gone to Rapture and Rime are going to be at the show this year. One the other hand, not much has been heard about Shadow of the Beast since its debut trailer at last year’s event.

  • Our Predictions: Likely for Everybody’s Gone to Rapture and Rime, Unlikely for Shadow of the Beast

Rumors indicate that Sony may not be done with remasters following the release of The Last of Us: Remastered. The currently rumored Playstation 4 exclusive ports are Beyond: Two Souls and God of War: Ascension. Sony also showed some interests with releasing the Uncharted trilogy on the next-gen system.

  • Our Predictions: Likely

Sony usually use up all their big surprises at E3. Gamescom is an event were smaller surprises like Everybody’s Gone to Rapture, Rime and Shadow of the Beast are announced. So we expect to see some surprise reveals although there won’t be any earth shattering megatons. A leaked list already confirmed that Journey and The Unfinished Swan is being ported to the Playstation 4.

  • Our Predictions: Likely for surprises, Unlikely for megatons

Aside from the topics mentioned above, Sony should also be talking up Bloodborne, Drive Club and The Order: 1886. Third party games with exclusive partnerships, like Destiny and Far Cry 4, should be heavily emphasized too. On the platform level, the company should reveal their plans on the Playstation Now game-streaming service and the Project Morpheus VR headset. We should be able to find out their full Gamescom plans very soon since their press conference is just a few hours away.
