Along with a standalone PlayStation TV release, Sony is also launching the PlayStation TV DualShock 3 Bundle. The SKU is designed to save customers money by including a few complimentary items: a DualShock 3 controller, 8 GB PlayStation Vita Memory Card and voucher to download the digital version of The Lego Movie Videogame. So is the bundle worth buying or are you better off building your own one?
First, let’s take a look at The Lego Movie Videogame. The general reception of the game has been good but it is also available on a bunch of other platforms other than the PlayStation Vita. Hardcore gamers will most likely prefer playing the superior console versions on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC instead of the handheld iteration on PlayStation TV. So there is very little value in the game, especially since you can’t resell it as you are getting the digital version.
The inclusion of the DualShock 3 controller is nice but you may want to upgrade to the DualShock 4, which is also compatible with PlayStation TV. The PlayStation 4 gamepad is much better than the previous iteration thanks to improved analog sticks, trigger buttons and ergonomic designs. If you want to use the Remote Play feature with PlayStation 4 games, or just any supported games in general, it is best to pick up a DualShock 4 even if it does cost more when buying with the standalone PlayStation TV than purchasing the PlayStation TV DualShock 3 Bundle.
The last item in the value bundle is the 8 GB PlayStation Vita Memory Card. Although it does come with 1 GB of internal storage, the PlayStation TV also uses the proprietary memory cards for more storage options. Based on our experience, the 9 GB total is not nearly enough if you like to download a lot of videogames. This is especially true if you are a member of PlayStation Plus and downloading new free games every month. So, if you are planning to download a bunch of digital releases, you should buy a bigger Vita Memory Card instead of the bundle.
So should you purchase the PlayStation TV DualShock 3 Bundle? If you are planning to use the device to its full potential and for the optimal experience, then the answer is no. Instead we suggest that you should buy the standalone PlayStation TV along with a DualShock 4 and 32 GB PlayStation Vita Memory Card (a 64 GB one is also available although it can only be imported at this time).
While buying all of the above costs more than the official bundle, it is worth the extra costs if you are going to utilize the device extensively. Check out each of our recommendations on Amazon –
Both the bundle and the standalone versions of PlayStation TV DualShock 3 Bundle are going to be made available on the 14th of October.
