In a live stream of the Eurogamer Expo, Derek Kirtzic explained how the roster is built in Mortal Kombat X. The first determining factor is the story. The team wants to have the best fit for the plot when choosing the fighters. The story of the upcoming release takes place after Mortal Kombat (2011) and is going to span a quarter of a century.
NetherRealm Studios also do not want to rely on any rinsing and repeating when constructing the roster. They are hoping to revive some of the stuff that has been done with the franchise over the past two decades with some new blood. So you can probably bet that there won’t be any returning characters.
The amount of fighters in Mortal Kombat X should be at least 24 characters. Goro, Kano, Raiden, Scorpion and Sub-Zero were already confirmed to be returning. The new comers being added are Cassie Cage (the daughter of Sonya Blade and Jhonny Cage, if you were curious), D’Vorah, Ferra & Torr in addition to Kotal Kahn.
Mortal Kombat X is available of the 14 of April. Being cross-gen, it will be coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. A computer version is also launching on the same day. If you haven’t done so already, click on this link to preorder the fighting game right now on Amazon.
