ESRB explains its Mature Rating for Root Letter: Last Answer

The Entertainment Software Rating Board has revealed its summary for Root Letter: Last Answer. The visual novel ended up with a Mature rating due to contents categorized as Blood, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes and Violence. You can find the full rating description for Last Answer below:

This is a visual novel in which players explore a murder mystery in modern-day Japan. Players explore locations, collect evidence and testimonies, and make choices affecting the story’s outcome. As players progress, they uncover various story elements, including flashbacks of a character’s suicide–depicted in still images with a blade to a character’s wrist and blood splatter on the ground. Other sequences depict additional instances of violence and blood: a man attacked by a crow; a character attacking with a knife; a ghostly figure with large bloodstains on his shirt.

The game contains some suggestive material: a silhouette of female pole dancers in a club; a boy on top of a girl after a struggle—story text indicates that he kissed her forcibly. The words “f**k,” “sh*t,” and “p*ssy” appear in the dialogue.

Root Letter: Last Answer is coming out on Sept. 3, 2019, in the U.S. region. If you are interested, you can pre-order the physical version on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 with this link from Amazon.
