Is the Xbox-branded Seagate 2TB external hard drive worth buying for Xbox One?

Microsoft recently announced and released the Seagate Game Drive in the North American region. The external hard drive adds an additional 2TB of storage to the Xbox One. So is the product worth purchasing or are you better off looking for another alternative? Let’s take a look at a few factors that you should consider before you can make up your mind.

About the Xbox One

The Xbox One originally came with a 500 GB HDD. Microsoft recently introduced a 1TB model as well. Even so, you can easily run out of room as all retail games are required to be installed on the hard drive. Not to mention that Xbox Live Gold members also get to download free games on a monthly basis. Add in patch updates and DLC packs and you will run out of space in no time.

Gamers can’t swap the default internal hard drive with a new one on the Xbox One. Fortunately, the system does support external storage. In order to play and save games, the device must use USB 3.0 for connectivity in addition to having at least 256 GB of capacity. Of course, the Seagate Game Drive meets these requirements.

Pricing

The Seagate Game Drive is priced a little too high for our liking (you can find its current price with this link). This is especially true when you consider that another Xbox One compatible HDD, the Seagate Expansion 2TB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0, is much cheaper (check out its present price tag with this page).

If you don’t care about portability, you can also find better value, in terms of the amount you pay per space, with the Seagate Expansion 3TB, 4TB and 5TB Desktop External Hard Drives. If you are interested, you can find the current prices for the three Seagate Desktop HDDs with the following links: Expansion 3TB Desktop External Hard Drive, Expansion 4TB Desktop External Hard Drive and Expansion 5TB Desktop External Hard Drive.

Aesthetics

The Seagate Game Drive uses the same lime green color found on the original Xbox as well as the Xbox 360 systems. The casing is embossed with both the Seagate and Xbox logos. You can check out some shots of the external HDD below this paragraph.

The lime green color makes it stick out against the standard black-colored console. This can be either good or bad depending on your tastes. If you don’t like the contrasting colors, then the Seagate Expansion hard drives we mentioned above are better alternatives.

Portability

The Xbox-branded Seagate 2TB external hard drive is very portable as you don’t need a power cord and it is small enough to carry around. These same advantages are also present in the above-mentioned Seagate Expansion 2TB Portable External Hard Drive as well.

Recap

While the Seagate Game Drive is great, it is more expensive than the Seagate Expansion 2TB Portable External Hard Drive, which has the same essential features at a cheaper price.
