At this year’s Tokyo Game Show, Sony announced that Bloodborne will be getting its first and only major expansion called The Old Hunters. If you are planning to pick up the DLC, we also suggest getting a few complementary products if you want the best experience possible. You can find our recommended list of items to buy along with Bloodborne: The Old Hunters below.
About Bloodborne: The Old Hunters
Before we start, let’s look into what’s included in The Old Hunters. To gain access to the new areas after downloading the expansion, you have to acquire the “Eye of a Blood-drunk Hunter.” The special item shows up at Hunter’s Dream at some point in the first half of the game.
In total, gamers will get to explore three new environments, which are home to new enemy types. To combat these creatures, the expansion also adds new sets of Caryll Runes, spells and weapons to your arsenal. Sony previously revealed that The Old Hunters is actually the size to two major expansions packed into one. So you should be getting more than your money’s worth with the Bloodborne DLC.
7.1 Surround Sound Headset
The oppressive atmosphere of Bloodborne is one of the best in gaming. To fully enjoy the world of the action-RPG, however, we recommend wearing a surround sound headset. Luckily, Sony has three PlayStation headsets on the market that are capable of producing 7.1 Virtual Surround Sound. Not to mention that the company also released a custom audio profile, via the Headset Companion App, just for Bloodborne.
The first is PlayStation Pulse Elite Edition Wireless Stereo Headset, which has the best quality in addition to coming with the exclusive Bass Impact feature. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative, you might want to take a look at the PlayStation Gold Wireless Stereo Headset, which has many of the same features and is actually better supported by Sony. The PlayStation Silver Wired Stereo Headset is the cheapest option although it pales in quality when compared to the other two.
Thus, we recommend either the Pulse Elite or Gold if you want to get the most out of your money. You can check out all three headsets with the following links: PlayStation Gold Wireless Stereo Headset, PlayStation Pulse Elite Edition Wireless Stereo Headset and PlayStation Silver Wired Stereo Headset.
Official Strategy Guide
In a somewhat unprecedented move, Future Press will be releasing an official strategy guide just for the upcoming expansion. The 208 pages of Bloodborne The Old Hunters Collector’s Edition Guide will cover the new areas (with illustrated maps), Caryll Runes, enemies, spells and weapons. The coverage also highlights all the changes that was made to both the main game, and the DLC, since the original launch. Lastly, the book will help players piece together the lore of Bloodborne.
Like the Souls series, Bloodborne can be very difficult at times, especially at launch when there is very little resources online to find help. So, if you are planning on doing everything in The Old Hunters, you might want to check out the Bloodborne The Old Hunters Collector’s Edition Guide as well. You can purchase the hardcover book from Amazon by using this page.
PlayStation Plus
Along with the expansion, Form Software will be releasing a new patch that will add a new oath called The League. By joining this team, you can help other players online and compete in an online rankings leader board. Not to mention that you can get a special cane weapon that can summon non-playable co-op partners to help you in your quest.
Just like the main game, you will need a PlayStation Plus subscription to play with other players online. Being a member of the service also has some great benefits, such as exclusive discounts and access to full games. So, if you haven’t done so already, you can buy a one year subscription here.
Base Game
Of course, you will also need the base game if you want to play the expansion. If you don’t own it, you can purchase a physical copy of Bloodborne with this link. You might also want to check out the Bloodborne Collector’s Edition Strategy Guide via this page as well.
Similar Games
If Bloodborne and The Old Hunters are you first time playing these type of Souls titles, there are similar games that you should also check out. Before developing the PS4 exclusive, From Software was responsible for Demon’s Souls (PS3), Dark Souls (PC, PS3 and Xbox 360) in addition to Dark Souls 2 (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC). You can find these games, which share plenty of elements with Bloodborne, with the following links: Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2.
Bloodborne: The Old Hunters will be released on the 24th of November. If you are getting the expansion, make sure you check out the complementary products we recommended in our list as well.
