Why you should play the original Gravity Rush before Gravity Rush 2

The recently released Gravity Rush 2 has been getting a lot of positive buzz from both critics and gamers. If you are planning to play the sequel, however, we highly recommend playing through the prequel beforehand. If you still need some convincing, you can check out our reasons as to why you must play the first game before the second one below.

Story

Gravity Rush 2 has three major arcs. Aside from not knowing the relationships between Kat and a few characters that originated from the first game, you should be able to get by just fine in the first arc of the sequel. Once you get to the second and third arcs, however, a lot of the character appearances and story beats wouldn’t be nowhere as impactful when compared to having to play the prequel beforehand. Not to mention that the story will be even more complicated to follow along without any prior knowledge.

So, if you want to get the most of Gravity Rush 2 from a narrative standpoint, then it is imperative that you play the original first.

Original Gravity Rush

Not to mention that you will also be missing out on a great game if you decided to skip out on the original. The first title initially came out for the PlayStation Vita on June 12, 2012. The original still remains one of the more technically impressive games built from the ground up for a handheld system thanks to its open-world environments where you can manipulate gravity for traversal.

Aside from some noticeable improvements (in terms of graphics and size of the environments), Gravity Rush 2 is not that different from the original game. So, if you think that you will enjoy your time with the sequel, then you should end up taking pleasure in its prequel as well.

Gravity Rush on Vita vs. Gravity Rush Remastered on PS4

If you do decide to play Gravity Rush, you will have two options to choose from: the original Vita release as well as Gravity Rush Remastered for the PlayStation 4. Even if you own both gaming systems, the PS4 port is the obvious winner.

The original Vita version is plagued with some control issues even if you turn off the motion-based gyroscope controls. For example, you have to use the touch screen to evade, gravity slide and pull of a finishing attack. These problems were remedied in the remastered version as the DualShock 4 features more buttons when compared to the Vita. Not to mention that the analog sticks on the PS4 controller is much better than the Vita’s.

Bluepoint Games, the studio behind the PlayStation 4 port, also did an excellent job with the console version. In addition to increasing the resolution to a full 1080p, the development team improved the textures and geometry as well. Last but not least, the frame rate was also doubled to 60 per second when compared to 30 per second from the original Vita game.

Not to mention that the PS4 game also comes with three post-launch DLC packs (Maid Pack, Spy Pack and Military Pack) bundled in at no additional costs. Last but not least, if you have a save file for Gravity Rush Remastered on your hard drive, you will unlock the Maid, Military Uniform and Spy costumes in Gravity Rush 2.

You can buy for Gravity Rush Remastered with this link on Amazon. If you are still interested, the original Vita version is also available for purchase here.

Gravity Rush Overture The Animation

After you beat the first game and before jumping right away to Gravity Rush 2, we also highly recommend checking out Gravity Rush Overture The Animation. This animated short takes place between the events of the first and second game of the series. Without watching it, you may be a little lost at the start of the second game. Sony has made both Part 1 and Part 2 of Gravity Rush Overture The Animation available for viewing on Youtube. You can check out the videos, if you are interested and haven’t done so already, below:

So, if you are planning to play Gravity Rush 2, make sure you play the first game (and watch Gravity Rush Overture The Animation), so that you will be able to get the most out of the story in the sequel.
