Is the Astro Gaming A40 Headset and Mixamp M80 Halo 5: Guardians Special Edition worth buying?

Microsoft is going all in when it comes to Halo 5: Guardians. The company will be releasing two collector’s editions of the game in addition to a system bundle and two limited edition controllers. Furthermore, Microsoft is also teaming up with Astro to release the Halo 5: Guardians version of the Astro Gaming A40 Headset and Mixamp M80.

So is the Xbox One gaming headset bundle worth buying? Let’s examine a few factors before you can make up your mind as to whether or not the special edition is worth a purchase.

Price Point

The Halo 5: Guardians Special Edition version of the Astro Gaming A40 Headset and Mixamp M80 is a little bit more expensive when compared to the Dark Grey/Orange and Light Grey/Blue iterations. You can check out the current price point of all three with the following Amazon links: Halo 5: Guardians Special Edition, Dark Grey/Orange and Light Grey/Blue.

Exclusive Features

With that said, the Halo 5: Guardians Special Edition version of the Xbox One game headset does have some exclusive features not found in the other iterations. The first is that Astro worked together with 343 Studios and Microsoft to design the product so that the headset will match the looks of the Xbox One Limited Edition Halo 5: Guardians Spartan Locke Wireless Controller in addition to the Xbox One Halo 5: Guardians Limited Edition 1TB Bundle. You can find a pair of photos for the headset below this paragraph.

The other exclusive feature is the inclusion of a Halo 5 Req Pack code. When redeemed, it will unlock the Astro emblem along with other content in the videogame.

Headset and Mix Amp

The Astro Gaming A40 Headset is designed with professional competitive gamers in mind. As a result, you can expect high quality sound (with distortion of less than 0.1 percent) coming out from the speakers. The included microphone is unidirectional and can be swapped when not in use. Last but not least, the over-the-ear ear pads and lightweight headband should make it comfortable to wear over long play sessions. The included Mixamp M80 is attached to the bottom of the Xbox One Wireless Controller.

The only downside to the product is that you will need to purchase the Astro Gaming MixAmp Pro if you want to experience Dolby Digital 7.1 game audio, which will make a game such as Halo 5: Guardians feel much more immersive. If you are interested, you can find the MixAmp Pro with this page.

Recap

The Astro Gaming A40 Headset and Mixamp M80 Halo 5: Guardians Special Edition is worth checking out if you are a fan of the first-person shooting series, especially if you are planning to purchase the matching Xbox One Halo 5: Guardians Limited Edition 1TB Bundle and/or the Xbox One Limited Edition Halo 5: Guardians Spartan Locke Wireless Controller as well. You can purchase the limited edition headset with this link.

In terms of features, the lack of surround sound support can be a big issue. Thus, we suggest getting the Astro Gaming MixAmp Pro if you are planning to get the A40. Alternatively, you can also purchase the Astro Gaming A50 Xbox One Headset, which natively supports Dolby Digital 7.1 game audio and has a special edition Halo version as well (although it doesn’t match the colors of the Spartan Locke inspired system and controller).
